A Calm, Wise Woman | Joni Tyner
S~ But a wise woman in the town called out to Joab, “Listen to me, Joab. Come over here so I can talk to you.“ 2 Samuel 20:16 (NLT)
O~ This is the background. David’s warriors are in hot pursuit to capture Sheba, a troublemaker (see 20:1) that was causing division in Israel. In verse 14, it says that Sheba was hiding in the town of Abel-beth-maacah and David’s men are ready to attack the entire town to get to Sheba. There is a (unnamed) wise woman in the town who calls out to Joab and asks for him to allow her to intervene in the impending invasion of their town by handing over Sheba’s head and thus avoiding destruction and loss of life to the town.
A~ I have been listening to audio books while I exercise and other tasks to learn and educate myself in a effortless way. This morning I was riding my bike and listening to “The Best Yes” by Lysa Turkeurst and she was talking about this story! (How crazy it was in our Bible reading!) Lysa pointed out that this woman was wise and able to positively impact her sphere of influence. We don’t know if she was rich, poor, young, old, just that she was knowledgeable and confident enough to speak wisdom to David’s leader’s and then the people in her town. She was able to save many lives by having common sense and being wise. Lysa pointed out she most likely lived a humble, trustworthy lifestyle because the town people listened to her and thus were saved from attack. She encouraged readers to continue to be in God’s Word to gain wisdom that will guide us in everyday life.
P~ Dear Lord, help me to seek You first and not freak out when circumstances seem crazy and out of my control. I desire to have a calm, commonsense response to big and little stuff that I encounter each day. Give me discernment about what to be involved in and words that help de escalate unnecessary drama.
