Don’t Sleep! | guest post

S~ There he told them, ‘Pray that you will not give into temptation’…’Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray, so that you will not give into temptation.’ Luke 22:40,46 (NLT)

O~ This is what Jesus urges the disciples in the garden to do twice, while he was praying an right before he was betrayed.

A~ Jesus stresses twice to the disciples how important it’s going to be for them to protect themselves through prayer against temptation. The chapter explains that they were exhausted from grief and fell asleep instead. They let their guard down and dismissed Jesus’ promptings to pray and rather than prepare themselves for the spiritual battle ahead, they slept. Maybe they thought, “We are in a garden late at night. There’s no trouble to be had here.” I relate to this sentiment. Oh, the times I’ve assumed there was no need to pray for strength when I believed I was strong enough, wise enough, healthy enough. It’s just enough to allow you to drop your guard and before you know it you are walking into a battle unarmed and unprepared. My guess is the disciples slept because they simply could not understand the gravity of that night. But Jesus knew and he pleaded with them to prepare themselves. He so lovingly does that for us; He will not let us walk into anything blind and alone. He wants us to live in victory, free of guilt, shame and regret. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” I can’t help but think of how much guilt could have been avoided if the disciples would have just prayed like Jesus told them too. Maybe no one would have acted out of anger and maybe Peter wouldn’t have denied Jesus three times. Don’t fall asleep on the battle field. A war is waging and your King is standing near at all times ready to arm you with everything you need to live a life of victory.

P~ God, help me to stay alert to my weaknesses. Please don’t let me believe that I am strong enough on my own because I am not. But you are sufficient! You are strong enough! You prepare me for battle and provide a path for me to walk to come out of the battle unscathed, if only I choose in the middle of the fight to run to you and ask for you help, guidance and protection. You promise a way out. You promise to give me everything I will need in those moments. You desire victory for me. May I run to you for the strength I need to defeat the enemies schemes. Gracious Father, Amen.
