“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Love is Not … | Kelley Deases
S~ [Love] is not easily angered. 1 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)
O~ Ah, the love passage! The one we hear at most weddings and have spent time memorizing at least a time or two. The standard for what our hearts should be if we were walking in the sinless perfection of Christ and fully bearing His image. But we have all fallen short. I certainly have and regularly do. Fortunately we have a Savior who rescues us, even from our own lack of love.
A~ Every time I read over this list of love’s attributes, a different one hits me between the eyes. Today it’s the “easily angered” one. Sometimes I feel “easily angered” can describe my relationship with my younger son. One of us gets bumped and lashes out at the other, who then reacts in kind, and then we are at odds. (sigh) The biggest problem with this oft-repeated dance is that one of the partners is a pre-adolescent boy who is trying to navigate a difficult school year, social situations and academic pressures. And the other is a grown-up who has already raised a child to adulthood and who should know better by now!
I know this is upsetting to my husband, who seems to have endless patience and bottomless love for both of us, that his wife and our son have the dynamics we do. But rather than my trying to excuse my behavior based on our respective temperaments, I need to lean into the power I possess, through the Holy Spirit within me, to squelch my “easily angered” flesh and show love to my boy.
P~ Jesus, Use today’s verse to remind me of who You have called me to be (and from what You are calling me to refrain). Thank You for providing the perfect picture of love in the flesh and for offering Your Spirit to help me in my weakness.
