May 10, 2018 Ruth 4; Psalm 65; 1 Corinthians 10

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

Quit Thinking About Yourself Before Others | Kimi Miller

S~ Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. 1 Corinthians 10:24 (NLT)

O~ Think about others first. In everything I do, their welfare should be placed above my own. Only You, God, can see matters of the heart; if I would seek Your counsel first You would tell me if I am wrong, or if any choices/words/actions would hurt another. It’s when I don’t seek You and do what I think is “right in my own eyes,” that poor choices/decisions are made. And every choice comes with a consequence.

A~ If I want the best outcome, I must seek wisdom from the best Counselor. I can only see things from my perspective, but You can see all of it. You know every motive, every heart wound, every perception and interpretation. You see it all. Why would I not consult with You first?!

Honestly, because I’m in too much of a hurry. Because I don’t think it’s a big enough deal to pray about, because I think I know enough about the situation to do what I think is right. And embarrassingly because it doesn’t even cross my mind to ask You what You think about it. I get caught up in my own little world, and my pride tells me what to do, and worse, I listen. And I’ve done it for so long, listening to myself over You comes more naturally than the other. But, I know You can change my heart and my mind.

P~ Oh God, forgive me! I’m sorry for all the times I act on my own accord without ever asking You about it. Please help me to slow down and see You first in all things. Help me to think of others the way You do. Help me to quit thinking about myself first.

Grow in Discipline | Kim Chipman

S~ No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

O~ In my Bible this section is entitled “warnings from Israel’s history”. v6 Now these things occurred as examples… v11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us…

A~ In my quest to bring back some self discipline this is encouraging.

  1. I am not alone. The Word is filled with examples of people who processed temptation well and poorly
  2. Temptation is not sin, but how I handle it can be and You always provide a way to choose well.
  3. You have given me everything I need. I cannot live in freedom unless I actually apply this knowledge to my thoughts and choices.

Later in this chapter it says (v23) “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. Just because I CAN doesn’t mean I SHOULD. You have given me free will to choose.

P~ Lord, help me to grow in discipline. My desire is for my life to bring You glory but I know I’ve wandered off track a bit. I love You!
