Destructive emotions | guest post

S~ Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret – it leads only to evil. Psalm 37:8 (NIV)

O~ Anger and fretting are two emotions that I experience daily.  My study bible calls them very destructive emotions.  They reveal a lack of faith that God loves me and is in control.

A~ I’ve never thought the root cause of anger and worry as a faith issue.  These two emotions reveal my lack of faith. My anger usually arises when things are out of my control and don’t go as I planned.  I get so frustrated over some situations.  But guess what?  Looking back over those situations that caused me anger; God worked it all out.

Fretting.  I can already feel that emotion rising up in me.  My son was in a car accident and the car will be fixed soon and he will be back on the road.  What am I to do besides fret?  NO.  The Lord is in control.  He never leaves my son’s side.  I cannot be in every single care ride that my son is in.

P~ Abba, You are in control, not me.  You are in control, not me.  Abby, You are in control and not me!  Thank You for that!  You say to refrain from anger and turn from wrath – like it’s so easy.  Turning away from wrath, refraining from anger and not fretting, these do not come naturally to me.  Please grow me in this area of life!  Teach me to be still before You and wait patiently for You!

S~ Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:5 (NIV)

O~ You are my Savior, my saving grace. When I keep my eyes on You, I’m reminded of the hope I can only find in You.

A~ I’m trying to become more and more aware of Your presence – to see You in every moment – even in what seems to feel mundane. It isn’t easy, but I’m trying. The hard part is remembering to keep my eyes open – to keep looking for You. Sometimes, I get so caught up in my doings,I forget You are there, too. I’m learning to slow down – that there really isn’t anything as important as seeing You – recognizing Your presence, inviting You into my day, allowing You to participate (or rather, You allowing me to participate in what You are doing!), but simply finding You in all of it. It’s when I’m looking for You that I’m most likely to find You. I just need to keep looking all day long.

P~ Lord, keep my eyes open. My hope comes from You alone. Help me to keep looking for You in every moment of my day.

A New Way | Joni Tyner

S~ Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in new way of living in the Spirit. Romans 7:6 (NLT)

O~ Once again, this scripture is reminding us that we serve God through our heart, NOT through performance.

A~ The phrase “not in the old way” is what caught my eye this morning.  I have been in a reflective mood recently and thinking about past life seasons.  I remember a generalized feeling of being overwhelmed, frustrated and critical with big and little things in life.  I was committed to doing activities that I thought a good Christian woman/wife/mom did but didn’t start with loving Him and reading His Word.  I did things (religious activity) that I thought was expected of me.  As I began to read the Bible for myself, I saw a change in my heart. I seemed to have more joy and less irritation with life.  Today, my heart responds to serve Him by first trying to be at His feet and then wait for opportunities that are often unplanned and non-organized.  I love the simplicity of Romans 3:28 in The Message

“God does not respond to what we do but we respond to what He does.”

P~ Dear Lord, fill me with a craving to be in Your Presence.  I ask for that first!!!  I also pray that you would bless me with hearing to hear Your Voice and energy, time and creativity to respond in a way that gives you glory.  Please forgive me for my selfish tendencies and woo my heart see others the way You see them.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at prayer@DiscoverOneThing.com
