Shake It Off | Kim Chipman

S~ And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:52 (ESV)

O~ Paul and Barnabas are traveling and preaching. What stands out to me here is that this verse immediately follows persecution being stirred up and them being driven out of the area. They shook off the dust from their feet and moved along. In spite of this they were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

A~ This is encouraging to me today.

During Bible study this week we were talking about the importance of the people we surround ourselves with. One gal said you can imagine you are standing up on a box. It is a lot easier for someone to pull you off the box than for you to pull them up onto the box with you. Similarly, negative attitudes are easier to “catch” than positive ones. I find this to be true for me. I’m not as effective at staying strong and positive in the midst of negativity as I’d like to be.

Here, the disciples seem unphased by the persecution. They shake it off and were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. They had a mission, they were focused, and they weren’t going to let the naysayers steal their joy.

I have a negative person in my life and I do allow it to steal my joy. Today, I’d like that to be different.

P~ Lord, I know You have a purpose for me. I know that He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world. When faced with negativity, give me the power of the Holy Spirit to continue to be filled with joy. When the persecution comes, help me to shake it off and be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit so I can continue to do the work You have for me to do. Just like Paul and Barnabas, help me to shake it off. I love You!
