February 5, 2019 Exodus 13,14; Matthew 5

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. A Child of God | Kimi Miller

S~ “You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. Matthew 5:44-47 (MSG)

O~ There is a weight that comes in knowing you carry a responsibility to represent your family well; when carefully explained and nurtured, I believe it’s a healthy burden to bear. Especially when you begin to understand Who you are ultimately representing. That is what Jesus is asking us to do here.

A~ In the NIV, verse 45 starts with, “that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” Known – identified – by your Father’s name. I remember reading that Lysa Terkeurst reminds her children when they are leaving the house, “Remember who you are. You are a Terkeurst.” I implemented that piece of wisdom right away to my own children, encouraging them to remember who they are each chance I can. But I need to do a better job reminding myself.

I love the way this Scripture is presented in the MSG, “Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty.”

P~ God, help me to be more and more like You. Keep reminding me who I am. Thank You for hearing my prayer.
