January 28, 2019 Genesis 49,50; Psalm 8; John 18:15-40

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

S~ When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for Him? Psalm 8: 3, 4 (NIV)

O~ What are things that blow my mind?  The way our bodies are designed and work and heal.  How our childhood can be the biggest impact of our adulthood, how one person that cares can make a difference in another’s life.  How really great and wonderful things take time, the quick fix isn’t usually the answer, but what I want.

A~ Considering the work of the Lord before I jump into my bible study puts me in the correct mindset.  If I don’t, I read God’s Word through my circumstances, my feelings, what’s happening in my world.

When I first consider the work of the Lord…I will ultimately end up with this question: who am I that You are mindful of me and love me so much?  Reading the Word through that mindset makes things so much clearer!

Somedays, the considering the work of the Lord takes longer.  I am tired, rushed, not focused.  But what if this was my key BEFORE opening God’s word?

P~ Abba, help direct my thoughts to Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, setting the moon and stars in place.  Who am I that You are mindful of me?  Lord, I desire that awe and wonderment for all my moments here on earth!

Prayer and Fasting | Joni Tyner

S~ The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. James 5:16 (NLT)

O~ James is reminding us that prayer makes a difference, especially when the person praying has humility and is living a righteous life.  (righteousness is having integrity, good character, goodness and decency.)

A~ Each January our church does a 21 day prayer and fasting time each January and so I am focusing on prayer over my usual SOAP journaling.  There isn’t anything magic about fasting, but I do believe it helps cultivate a humble heart that desires to be right with God.  I am believing God for this specific prayer and I want to do my very best at being consistent with my prayers and living a lifestyle that reflects the things of God.

P~ Dear Lord, Please forgive me for the countless times I’ve been so lazy in my prayer life. I haven’t given You my best, I’ve told people I would pray and then forgot.  I’ve fallen asleep during prayers and started daydreaming. I’m so sorry that I have done this!   I want to be a woman after God’s heart and I know this includes intentional prayer.  I ask for Your help!  Please give me a passion to pray for people.  I come to You this morning and ask that You work in a mighty, amazing way in this situation that grieves my heart.  I want to see You receive glory!  I ask for discernment  and wisdom with my words and actions.  Lord, I believe You are working everything for our good.  Thank you for Your faithfulness.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at prayer@DiscoverOneThing.com
