“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Total Surrender | Kelley Deases
S~ The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father. John 10:17-18 (NIV)
O~ As I open these pages to get to know Him more and more, today He shows me how, in obedience to His Father, Jesus didn’t just do what the Father told him to do, He fully and voluntarily surrendered to The Father’s plan. Jesus did not simply allow His dignity and His very life to be taken, but He gave it willingly in love and true devotion.
In yesterday’s note, I reflected upon how Jesus valued the heart of a lone man He had healed from blindness above setting the record straight and justifying Himself before the religious leaders or the crowds. Here again, He clarifies that, at any point along the way toward the cross, Jesus had the authority to put these men in their place, reveal Himself as God and justify Himself to His accusers. But in failing to justify Himself, Jesus justified us before God. So time after time when I read how Jesus remained silent and I wanted to scream, “Speak up! Tell them who You are!” I see how Jesus made the harder choice to humble Himself and submit to the laying down of His life. And He did this out His great love for me.
A~ Over these past couple weeks, I have felt a bit like I am going through the spiritual motions without really having my heart in it. I sit with Him every few days when I can work it into my morning routine. I open my door to a group of ladies weekly and enjoy their fellowship. I agreed to speak at an upcoming retreat. I go to work three days a week at a Christian mission which serves the poor and hungry. I attend and serve and pray with a church body which is having crazy impact locally and in other parts of the world. But is my whole heart surrendered to Him and fully immersed in these plans and people He has given me? I want to get back to doing what He is calling me to do out of true devotion and genuine love for my Father, not just checking the next thing off on my pre-established to-do list.
P~ Jesus, Your great love for me puts my love for You to shame. But I ask for a renewed sense of purpose as I meet with You more consistently, receive that fresh word, take it to heart and put it to action. I do not want to be a Christian who merely goes through the motions!
