January 5, 2019 Genesis 9,10; John 3:22-36

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

Wisdom of John | guest post

S~ To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. John 3:27 (NIV)

O~ John the Baptist is explaining his purpose in life to someone who was frustrated.  Jesus has started his ministry.  John is still in his ministry – pointing others to Jesus.  This segment of Scripture is so humbling and beautiful, I want to have the attitude that John had here.

A~ I think John the Baptist might be my favorite person in the Bible besides Jesus.  John knew who Jesus was to his core, but still doubted and wondered later in life.  And Jesus loved him so much regardless.

P~ Abba, as I meditate on John’s words of being able to receive only what You have given, what do I need to know?  Let me receive what You have given me.  Let me care for it well, let me accomplish what You have set, and let me love without agenda to those You have given me!  I pray this in Jesus’ Name!

Humble Servant | Kim Chipman

S~ He must become greater; I must become less John 3:30 (NIV)

O~ So much of Jesus’ life, example, and ministry taught us how to be a servant-leader. He taught us that humility is strength and power. John is teaching the same thing here. His ministry wasn’t about him becoming well known or highly regarded. The entire purpose was to make JESUS well known and highly regarded.

A~ This is a rare quality these days. In our culture of social media, filters, platforms, offendability, and selfies, genuine humility is tough to find. Genuine humility is tough to cultivate. But this is the ultimate goal of every believer – humble servant. The polar opposite of the direction culture is going is the direction I should be going.

So…am I? Am I becoming less so You can become greater? Am I leading people to You (and not me)? Hmmmm…some days yes, some days no. Time to reset this as a filter on my attitude, ambition and direction.

My word for this year is BEST. Humble servant is definitely Your BEST plan for me.

P~ Lord, help me to live my days in a way that You become greater and I become less. Show me how to server You in this way today. I love You.
