“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. That Critical Moment | Kelley Deases
S~ If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. Genesis 4:7 (NIV)
O~ The Lord knew that when Abel was praised for his worthy offering to the Lord and Cain received criticism and rebuke for his, Cain would be angry and tempted to lash out in his anger. In that critical moment when Cain can either choose a destructive and inappropriate reaction or a self-controlled response, the Lord calls to him asking, “Which will you choose this day?”
A~ I have definitely been there! Recently, I overlooked a deadline at work and compromised our organization’s ability to apply for funding with a certain foundation. For days I was bogged down by guilt and shame over what was an honest mistake in a busy and stressful season. I finally had to talk it over with my husband and let myself off the hook. I had to choose to move forward, learn from it, and not miss other opportunities as I sulked and beat myself up. This was one mistake, but I have added value to our agency in many other aspects over my 2.5 years there.
In my parenting, I am also faced with this choice: when I am faced with a challenging day, situation or attitude, will I choose to master my sin and respond with love and patience, or will I give in to the sin crouching near urging me to lash out in my anger and impatience?
P~ Father, I am grateful for these words You spoke to Cain, clarifying this moment of truth between taking offense and reacting sinfully or heeding criticism and learning to grow in spiritual maturity, mastering our desire to sin rather than being mastered by sin.
