“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Arrogant, Overfed, and Unconcerned | Kim Chipman
S~ Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. Ezekiel 16:49 (NIV)
O~ The city of Sodom was totally corrupt and therefore completely destroyed by God. My study Bible says, “It is easy to judge and condemn Sodom, especially for its terrible sexual sins. Ezekiel reminded Judah, however, that Sodom was destroyed because its people were arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned about the needy people within their reach. It is easy to be selective in what we consider gross sin. If we do not commit such horrible sins as adultery, homosexuality, stealing, and murder, we may thing we are living good enough lives. But what about sins like arrogance, gluttony, and indifference to the needy? Those sins may not be as shocking to you as the others, but they are also forbidden by God.”
A~ When I read “she and her daughters were arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned” I thought to myself…my goodness that’s me. There are so many wonderful things about my life and I am so very grateful for it, but I see how I’ve gotten complacent and comfortable. Overfed and unconcerned.
I was talking with a friend recently and she was sharing a particular situation in her life that she chooses out of obedience, but it is very much outside her comfort zone. It’s hard, but she knows it’s right. I found myself wondering…when is the last time that I did that? Walked purely out of obedience even when I really didn’t want to andn it came at a high cost. I absolutely HAVE done that before, but recently? Not really.
I’m realizing that arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned is what is inside the box wrapped in COMFORT. The box look pretty and desirable but really it is NOT. In fact, it can lead me to disobedience and sin. The same sin that God destroyed Sodom for.
P~ Lord, draw my heart back into passionate, sacrificial obedience. I know denial of self, taking up my cross, and boldly following You is my life’s call as a believer. Help me choose You over me. For Your glory. I love You!
