“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. Love Like Jesus | Kimi Miller

S~ Loving God means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3 (NLT)

O~ burdensome: difficult to carry out; taxing; undesirably restrictive

A~ Why do I often think doing what You ask of me is going to be exhausting? It must surely be my selfish nature. The only thing You ask of me is to love God and love people. I can only surmise that it is the weight of obligation that is so heavy. Obligation: a duty or commitment to which I am legally or morally bound – like a yoke upon my shoulders. But obedience, obedience is different – not easier, but lighter. Lighter because it requires submission – submission the One carrying the weight.

Submission to You, for me, means seeking Your will. Asking Your input on the situation and my involvement in it. It means getting still and LISTENING before I act, do, or speak. It means surrendering myself to Your will – knowing, trusting, believing that I can only do what You grant me strength and power to accomplish. And knowing You don’t have to meet me there with the answers or the direction, but You always do. Every time.

I love You because You first loved me. Because You see all the ugliness, selfishness, and thoughtlessness inside me (the stuff that never makes it out for others to see – and Lord help me for the stuff that does get out!), and You love me still. It’s this crazy love You have for me that helps me love others. It’s this amazing love You have for me that makes me want to be obedient – to submit to You. It’s this incredible love You have for me that leaves me undone and unashamed. It’s this containable love You have for me that you ask me to share with others. And how could I not? Loving You first makes loving others second nature. At least, that is my hope and desire – I have a feeling it is Yours, too.

P~ Help me to love like You, Jesus. We all need it. Amen.

Idolatry, Ugh | Kim Chipman

S~ Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:21 (NIV)

O~ It’s interesting to me that this would be the very last verse of the entire book of 1 John. It seems like the beginning of a longer conversation, not the end of one. This entire chapter sets up who Jesus is to us then ends with this charge – keep yourselves from idols.

A~ Seems simple enough. Once you know who Jesus is, it would seem perfectly natural to follow Him alone.

Simple to understand, not easy to do.

I struggle with idols that suck my time and energy. I know I do. I just started a Bible study that I’ve done before – The Seven Experiment. For me this will be a practical way I can keep myself from idols. I’ll take some intentional time to check my heart about some practical areas – food, clothes, possessions, media, waste, spending, and stress.

P~ Lord, I pray that through the process of this Bible study You will enlighten me to areas of idolatry in my heart. Help me to see them and to refocus my heart to You, removing any obstacles between us. I love You.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at
