August 31, 2018 Job 33; James 5:7-20

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

If One Should Wander | Kelley Deases

S~ My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20 (NIV)

O/A~ Just before sitting down to read my Bible this morning, I was debriefing with my husband (as he is coming home from the night shift and heading to bed and I am heading out to start my day). We were discussing a family we know who had moved away but has now returned to the Christian school where my son attends. We have a long history with this family, but the abbreviated version is this: This husband and wife were pastors at a small church which ended up turning into a mission serving the poor. The wife passed away 9 years ago, while she was pregnant with the couple’s 11th child. By all appearances, so devastated by the loss of his wife and overwhelmed with ten children to raise all on his own, the husband bowed under the weight of it and walked away from the mission, the church and seemingly his faith. Before the family moved out of the area, we had opportunity to pour into the lives of a few of the children, especially the youngest, who my son considers one of his best friends. In addition to having him over and going on outings with him, our Bible study bought Christmas presents for the family. Now that they have returned, we are happy and humbled to hopefully be able to resume relationship. My husband specifically mentioned how he wants to try to reconnect with this father and urge him to return to church and have some accountability, maybe through his men’s group. If, in fact, this man has wandered from the truth, as it would appear, it is on John’s heart to try to steer him back (and very much on my heart to show God’s love to the 10-year-old son through his relationship with my son).

P~ Father, We first became aware of this family through a tragic story reported on the evening news. We next intersected  through a friendship between two boys at school, witnessing more pain and need, My job is actually at the very mission this family founded years ago. Now we have yet another opportunity to cross paths. We know, God, You are in this and we look to You for how best to be a blessing and, if necessary, help guide a grieving husband and father back to You.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at prayer@DiscoverOneThing.com
