God’s Power | Joni Tyner

S~ For God did not give us a spirit of fear and timidity , but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

O~ Paul is reminding us that God has given believers the Spirit who gives us the gifts of power, love and self-discipline.

A~ These are amazing characteristic traits  that the Holy Spirit has given me—yet I frequently forget about them.  I seldom pray that I  am filled with God’s power to respond to life’s stuff with these gifts.   My typical response is to attempt self-discipline with my own strength, (or—more often,  fail by my own weakness).  HEY!!!!   The light bulb is turning on!!!  My daily victory through all of life’s big and little stuff will be found when I submit to the Spirit and ask for His strength.  I  heard this version of Romans 8 recently from the Message.  I love how it says, “God’s Spirit beckons” and this resurrection life is not timid—there are things to do and places to go!

So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go! This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” Romans 8:10-12  The Message

P~ Dear Lord, Please forgive me for trying to rely on my own effort to get through my days!!! You have filled me with power to overcome daily inconveniences, frustrations and the big, ugly stuff that breaks my heart.  I ask for increased awareness to default to Your power. Give me constant nudges to tap into Your strength.  I want to finish this life race with excellence and I realize that won’t be done with Joni’s effort, it is through the daily, hourly default of seeking You and being filled with Your power.

S~ So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me His prisoner.  But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, Who has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace. 2 Timothy 1:8, 9a (NIV)

O~ Paul is writing to a pastor whose church is facing persecution.  Paul is encouraging him that everything leads back to the gospel and Jesus our Savior.

A~ The kids are starting a whole new school.  New students, new teachers, new administrators, new parents.  Something inside of me has been growing over the summer: a desire for my kids to fit in and make friends.  And for me to fit in with the other parents.

My brain knows that the gospel moves by relationships, but my heart just wants to be accepted by the new parents at this point. I’m probably getting a small taste of what my kids are going through right now.

I don’t want to be ashamed of the gospel!  But if I’m honest, I’m seeking man’s approval over God’s because I want to fit in and I want my kids to fit in.  Oh, how that thought must break God’s heart.  He has plans – big ones – with this change in schools.  These plans are to grow me, grow my kids’ hearts, and to change the new relationships at the school for eternity.

P~ Oh Father, thank You for naming the thoughts running through my head!  Give me a new heart:  one that desires Your will over mine to fit in and be accepted.  Give my kids a heart to not be ashamed to testify about You!  Teach us to join You in suffering for the gospel as we enter high school.  You have saved us and called us to a holy life because of Your plan, Your goodness, and Your never ending grace!  Help us to live that – as my kids go through high school and me – as I’m cheering them on from the sidelines.  I pray this in Jesus’ Name!
