May 10, 2018 Ruth 4; Psalm 65; 1 Corinthians 10

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

Life Orchestrated | Marisa Hartman

S~ So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. Ruth 4:13 (NIV)

They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. Ruth 4:17b

O~ Boaz became Ruth’s husband because he had fallen for her but also to be her and Naomi’s “kinsman-redeemer.” Kinsman-redeemer is a Male relative who acts on behalf of a relative in trouble, danger, or need. Naomi and Ruth, as widdows, were vulnerable. God directed their interactions to provide for everyone. Boaz gained land, a wife he loved, and an heir. Ruth gained a husband she loved, a baby boy, and a home. Naomi gained the protection and care she needed and a larger family that loved her.

A~ God orchestrates our lives in ways we never expect. Ruth lost her husband and was devastated. I lost mine and was devastated as well. As much as I didn’t understand at the time, God was orchestrating my future just like He did Ruth’s. My wonderful husband is my Boaz. He came after the hurt and devastation of my previous marriage and mended my heart and life through God’s divine plan. Just like Ruth, I have a loving husband who continues to walk with me through this bumpy life. My Savior Jesus redeemed my life. All I have is through Him. I am so glad that He sent my partner, provider, and best friend- my Boaz.

P~ Lord, thank you for redeeming my story. Thank you for the loving, supportive man that I have been so blessed by. Lord, I pray that You continue our story just as you did Ruth and Boaz’s. Please bless us with a child. We are your servants and will walk the path You choose for us. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be open to you.” (NIV) I seek Your face and ask for the blessing of a child. My knock has already been answered when You accepted me as Yours. Thank you for being a God that I can bring my desires to. My heart is obedient to Your will no matter what. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Grow in Discipline | Kim Chipman

S~ No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

O~ In my Bible this section is entitled “warnings from Israel’s history”. v6 Now these things occurred as examples… v11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us…

A~ In my quest to bring back some self discipline this is encouraging.

  1. I am not alone. The Word is filled with examples of people who processed temptation well and poorly
  2. Temptation is not sin, but how I handle it can be and You always provide a way to choose well.
  3. You have given me everything I need. I cannot live in freedom unless I actually apply this knowledge to my thoughts and choices.

Later in this chapter it says (v23) “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. Just because I CAN doesn’t mean I SHOULD. You have given me free will to choose.

P~ Lord, help me to grow in discipline. My desire is for my life to bring You glory but I know I’ve wandered off track a bit. I love You!

  1. Marisa, thanks for sharing your story. What a beautiful thing it is when we allow God to guide our lives, it’s been so fun to see you watch you come alive as you fell in love and got married. I’m thinking of the Psalm, “there may be pain in the night, but joy comes in the morning.”
