April 16, 2018 Joshua 9,10; Romans 9:19-33

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

Consult the Lord | Kim Chipman

S~ So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord. Joshua 9:14 (NLT)

O~ Joshua and the leaders had been given specific instructions from God to make no treaties with any of the people in Canaan. The people from Gibeon decided to deceive Joshua into making a peace treaty with them to guarantee their safety. They lied about where they came from. Joshua examined the evidence they presented, but did not consult the Lord before ratifying their agreement with a binding oath.

A~ Joshua and the Israelite leaders relied on what they could see and what the Gibeonites told them to make their decision. They made the decision on their own without consulting You. Pride. They figured they could handle this little and obviously easy decision on their own. I do this ALL. THE. TIME. Apart from You I can do NOTHING (John 15:5). Nothing. But pride says…”I’ve got this”. Joshua had to keep his word because he made a commitment he didn’t want to break. Breaking a commitment was serious to the Lord, too, and he didn’t want to continue making poor choices! I shouldn’t rely on what I think I see without consulting You. Apart from You I can do NOTHING. Nothing.

P~ Thank You for Your Word. I need You. I love You.

By Faith | Luisa Penaherrera

S~  But the Jews who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded. Why not?  Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of depending on faith.  Romans 9:31,32 (NLT)

O~  The notes from my bible:
The Jews had a worthy goal—to honor God.  But they tried to achieve it the wrong way by rigid and painstaking obedience to the law.  Thus some of them became more dedicated to the law than to God.  They thought that if they kept the law, God would have to accept them as his people.  But God cannot be controlled.  The Jews did not see that their scriptures, the Old Testament, taught that salvation depended on faith not on human effort.

A & P~   Dear God, I stumble in this also. I put pressure on myself and others with should do’s to please you. Yet because of faith in Jesus you are already pleased with me, with us. Please forgive me for depending on what I do. Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
