March 31, 2018 Deuteronomy 12,13; Acts 28

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. Click HERE to go directly to the daily reading if you wish.

Love and Truth | Kim Chipman

S~ You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit, Deuteronomy 12:8 (NIV)

O~ God is giving the Israelites laws for worship in the Promised Land. There were particular ways God wanted that to be done, starting with destroying everything the pagans used for worship.

A~ It is impressed on my heart this morning that this is the same in our lives now – in MY life now. My life isn’t supposed to look like the rest of the world if I’m living a life of worship. It isn’t reflective of Your character for everyone to do as they see fit. It is common in our culture today for there to be a “what’s the big deal” sort of attitude. Everything goes. Accept everything. That’s not Your way. Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

We had a discussion in Bible study this week about loving people who are actively engaged in sin. What is our role in that? How is it different if we are their friend or their Mom? We need to love others well, but IN TRUTH.

1 Cor 13:6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

Eph 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

1 Jn 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

P~ Oh. Lord. Help me to do this well, Help me to embrace a lifestyle of discipline that honors You. You hate sin. I’m not to do whatever I see fit- my heart is deceitful. I need Your truth. I need Your Word. I need Your wisdom and discernment. I need You. Help me to live and love like You in truth. I love You!

Are you listening? | Marisa Hartman

S~ Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen! Acts 28:28 (NIV)

O~ The Jewish people that Paul is sharing the good news of Christ are divided on whether or not they believe him. They begin arguing with one another and completely miss the message of salvation. Paul knows his mission to share the gospel after his personal encounter with Jesus. If the Jews aren’t listening, the Gentiles will.

A~ Am I hearing the gospel or am I just hearing the words being spoken? As a daughter of the King, am I hearing the great news of salvation or am I letting my personal filters influence what I actually hear? Recently, a pastor that isn’t my favorite was preaching. Internally, my heart sank, I’m ashamed to admit. I struggled to engage and actually listen. As soon as I knew the passage he was speaking on that day, I jumped right into reading and completely tuned him out. I was taking notes that the outside observer would assume were about the message, but in reality they were about what I was reading. While reading your Bible and taking notes are good things, ignoring what the Holy Spirit may be saying through your pastor, is not.

A~ Lord, please forgive me for allowing my pre-conceived notions take over. Help me to hear your message, no matter the messenger.

His Story | Kelley Deases

S~ Boldly and without hindrance, he [Paul] preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 28:31 (NIV)

O~ This is the very last sentence in the Book of Acts. Kind of unsatisfying as far as book endings go. What happened to Paul? What about the appeal of the case against him? What, then, when Paul’s two years in the rented house came to a close? The Bible leaves a lot of gaps in the stories of the lives of many of its major and minor characters. But, in the final analysis, the Bible is not meant to be a collection of short stories or biographies but God’s Story, revealing Himself to people throughout the ages.

A~ I think the lesson for me today is that my story, likewise, should be subjugated to His story. When I look back over my life, I should see how His hand carried me and provided for me. As I live in the present, I should prioritize being His hands and feet over accomplishing my own agenda. And as I look to the future, I should be content to go wherever He calls me. My story should be of Him in me.

P~ Lord, You have always been and always will be. In my lifetime, help me grow in my affection for You and in my reflection of You to the world.

  1. Kim, i think you nailed it with the reference scriptures. I personally believe this is the toughest challenge for believers to do well. Although we will never probably get it completely right, I believe having a continued heart of humility and a genuine desire to please the Lord will help us navigate these tough waters.
