Teach Them To Your Children | Kelley Deases

S~ Teach them [God’s commands] to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 11:19 (NIV)

O~ God, through Moses, is reminding His people of what they have seen with their own eyes about God’s great and mighty miracles and of His faithfulness to His people.  He adds that their children have not witnessed all of these things with their own eyes. and need to be told and taught who God is.

A~ This is a timely reminder for me as I do my best to parent a 10-year-old boy with whom I seem to butt heads daily. I need to remember that, just like his knowledge of a great many things is still limited by his age and inexperience, his knowledge of who God is is also limited to what he has been taught and experienced firsthand in his ten years of life. I cannot expect him to grasp all that I have come to know of God in my nearly 5 decades on this planet, but I definitely could do a better job weaving more of what I do know into my conversations with him.

P~ Father, Help me take every opportunity to tell and teach my son more about who You are and what I have seen of You with my own eyes. Help my words to be seasoned with grace and compassion for he is still young. And, even with all I know of You, I still fall painfully short of living up to who you want me to be at times.

Struggles | guest post

S~ Scripture found in Acts 27
…we encountered strong headwinds that made it difficult to keep the ship on course… ~verse 4
We had several days of slow sailing, and after great difficulty we finally neared Cnidus.  But the wind was against us.  ~verse 7
We struggled along the coast with great difficulty… ~verse 8
We had lost a lot of time… ~verse 9
About midnight on the fourteenth night of the storm, as we were being driven across the sea… ~verse 27

O~ Paul is a prisoner and his guards are trying to get him to Rome via ship.  These verses describe the journey to Rome, don’t they just sound like life?  Strong headwinds that make it difficult to navigate, slow sailing, great difficulty, the wind was against us, struggled with great difficulty, lost a lot of time, 14 days of pounding storms, being driven across the sea.

A~ Being in the storms of life can be draining!  Like having a rain cloud over your head day in and day out – never seeing a glimpse of the sun or relief.

But maybe it’s ok?  When Paul and everyone else on the ship was in that season of storms and difficulties to get to Rome….was God still in charge?  YES He was!!

For whatever reason, He allowed the storms, the difficulties.  Who knows why, but I can see in Scripture that people believed in Jesus because of the ship wreck.

Maybe some of the crew got to know Jesus through the storm?  Who knows?

But in my storms…God is still in charge.  My storms have purpose.  He is near to me.  I am not immune to storms, I’m going to have to go through them.  My storms are different than anyone else’s, but they are designed for My Father to navigate them for me.  They are to grow my faith and trust in Him.  And help me to really choose what I believe.

P~ Storms Lord…Your ways are so different than the world’s!  I can’t get over You!  Help me to settle into this storm and not miss anything You would have for me.  In Jesus’ Name I pray! Amen!

What Do I Believe? | Kim Chipman

S~ So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said. Acts 27:25 (NLT)

O~ Paul was a prisoner traveling on a boat with other prisoners guarded by a Roman officer. They were stuck in a storm at sea so severe they were throwing cargo and supplies overboard to try to survive. They had no food an the terrible storm raged on for days. Paul told them to take courage because an angel of the Lord told him that they would all survive and he believed God.

A~ I’m sure that all those people on that ship thought Paul was a little crazy. There was nothing about the current situation that would have given them hope of survival. But God told Paul they would be safe and he chose to believe God and not his circumstances.

I need to make the same choice. To believe You and trust You and not the limited vision of circumstance.

P~ Lord, help me to choose well. Help me to choose You. Help my heart to say “For I believe God. It will be just as He said.” I love You!
