“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (NLT) The heart of this ministry is to inspire a love for God’s Word and encourage the discipline of daily Bible reading and SOAP journaling. These are a few of our SOAP notes from today’s reading. We encourage you to read and journal on your own first, then join us in conversation about what God revealed to YOU today. He Uses It All | Kimi Miller
S~ But the believers who were scattered preached the Good News about Jesus wherever they went. Acts 8:4 (NLT)
O~ Persecution caused the believers to scatter, and God used it to help spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. You use it all – even the unbearable. What the enemy intended for evil, You turned for good – for Your glory and the saving of many lives.
A~ Often times I cannot see or understand why You allow things to happen. From my perspective they don’t make much sense, but I know and believe that You are sovereign. And I know You don’t want any one of Your children to perish. You have given us each the beautiful gift of free will – the will to serve ourselves, or You. To choose to love or to hate, to laugh or to cry. To believe and see, or choose to ignore. The choice is always mine to believe and obey…or not.
Your love is so great – so simple and yet so complex that in our choices, You still find ways to turn it to good – for Your glory and the saving of many lives. Your ways are not our ways; Your thoughts higher than ours. How is it, You can love so purely? Without reservation or limitation? Truly, I cannot fully grasp the depth of this love. I can’t understand it…I can only accept it.
P~ God, Your love overwhelms me. Your love for me cannot be described by pen and paper or word and song. It leaves me undone. Because of Your love, You make a way for the impossible. You make beauty out of ashes. You use every part of our lives, because You are IN every part of our lives! All I can say to that is, “I love You, too.”
Gift Envy | Joni Tyner
S~ “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit.” Acts 8:19 (NLT)
O~ A man named Simon was a Sorcerer in Samaria who meets Phillip as he is traveling about and sharing the gospel. Phillip, along with John and Peter, are evangelizing and pray for the Holy Spirit to enter believers. It was very dramatic and Simon asks Phillip if he can also receive the ability to pray the Holy Spirit into people.
A~ My Bible notes explain that Simon was envious of the attention Phillip was getting from the people of Samaria and he wanted to “wow” them with miraculous signs. His motivation was not to give God glory or encourage others, but to make himself look good (and probably wealthy). I really like the rest of the explanation in my Bible notes: “God doesn’t give us abilities to enhance our own lives. He grants us gifts so that we may bring Him glory by building up others. When you find yourself wishing for an ability that would put you in the limelight or somehow enrich you personally, check your motives. Instead of sitting around wishing for talents you don’t have, spend time serving God and others with what you do have.” –from the Life Application Bible, page 1832.
P~ Dear Lord, you have created me to be the exact person You want! Help me to understand that and embrace this truth. I always seem to be looking around and comparing myself to others and thinking that I would serve you better if only ______. I pray for increased confidence in the gifts You’ve given me. Please chisel away the junk and negative stuff and fill me with more of You. I pray for a hunger to read Your word and that it would transform my thinking and actions. I ask that You give me direction and energy to do the assignments You’ve given me.
Keep My Heart Right | Kim Chipman
S~ You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Acts 8:21 (NIV)
O~ Simon wanted to buy the ability to share the Holy Spirit. Peter spoke harshly against that. No amount of money can make a person right with God. You can’t buy a repentant heart or the power of the Holy Spirit. The prosperity gospel might make you think so, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
A~ Is my heart right? I know I’ve been more complacent lately. Ultimately, I WANT to be part of Your ministry, but how can I inspire others if my own passion is growing dim? I need to discipline myself in order to keep my heart right and allow the infusion of the power of the Holy Spirit to flow in and through me. I need to lead myself well before I can lead ANYone else well.
P~ I need You, Lord. Help me to remember to focus on daily disciplines so I stay connected to You – my power source. Help my life bring You glory. I love You!
