The Physical and the Spiritual | Kelley Deases
S~ Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval. John 6:27 (NIV)
O~ At this point in the Gospel story, crowds are following Jesus around because He has miraculously fed them all with just a few loaves and a couple of small fish. Now that He has their attention, He wants to point them beyond food which temporarily fills their stomachs to that which has eternal value in the spiritual realm.
A~ This is a common theme of the messages delivered at Heartland Hope Mission, where I work. People are drawn to our organization because we provide free groceries, free clothing, free hygiene items, free diapers, and other necessities for low-income families. But while they are there, they will hear about the Bread of Life, the Living Water, and other truths which bear on their eternities, not just the needs of the moment. We are utilizing the perfect ministry model, the one used by Christ Himself, to meet physical needs and then draw spiritual parallels.
P~ Father, I am so honored and grateful to be able to work for a faith-based organization, where we regularly get to see needs met and eternities changed.
End Entitlement | Joni Tyner
S~ But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. John 6:27 (NLT)
O~ Jesus is talking to a crowd after the feeding of the five thousand. He is teaching the people to seek God for eternal life, not for the physical benefits (miracles) that he did.
A~ I sometimes struggle with entitlement. I feel like since I’m a Christian and do ____ and ____, God will do _____ for me. I know this is a very poor (and wrong) attitude, I think is is what Jesus is talking about. He wants our hearts to love and obey Him because of who He is, not because of what He does for us.
P~ Dear Lord, please forgive me for the countless times I’ve been disappointed that a prayer wasn’t answered in the way I thought it should be. Please help me to always seek Your will. I pray for contentment with the physical stuff of this world. I really don’t deserve all You’ve blessed me with, thank you so much for choosing me to be one of Your daughters!
