Convinced | Kimi Miller

S~ The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate of it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. Genesis 3:6 (NLT)

O~ The woman was convinced. Convince is defined as ‘completely certain about something.’ The woman was completely certain that she would not die when she touched the fruit, or ate of it. She was completely certain that she would be like God – knowing both good and evil. And she wanted it.

So she took it.

The devil had convinced the woman to sin – to deliberately disobey God – by enticing her with a twisted version of the truth. This is how he works ALL.THE.TIME. He twists the truth, so that you will question it. Notice in Genesis 2:15, God said, “You may freely…” but that’s not how the devil posed it. Instead, he twisted God’s words to make it appear as if God is One of restriction. “Did God really say you must not…” (Gen. 3:6, emphasis mine). That subtle twist cause the woman to doubt the goodness of God. It caused her to wonder if God was holding out on her – withholding something better. So the devil tempted her…and she was convinced that he was right.

How many times have I allowed the devil to convince me that the twisted truth (let’s call it what it really is – a LIE!) is something God is keeping from me? How many times has this subtle seed of thought caused me to doubt God’s goodness towards me?  How often has the devil convince me to take matters into my own hands?  I’m embarrassed to say.

A~ Temptation does not come from You, God (James 1:13). When I am tempted, I need to remember that You will ALWAYS provide a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). When I’m uncertain, I must go back to the whole Truth. I must ask You, God, what You have to say about it. I can seek Truth and wisdom from Your Word. I must take time to pray about it – to talk with You about it – to seek Your input and to experience Your peace. That is how I will know the answer, and what to do, because it will come with Your peace.

Your peace convinces me.

P~ Holy Spirit, thank You for guiding me. Thank You for leading me to eternal peace – a peace I can’t explain. Forgive me, Lord, for the times I am convinced otherwise. I love You, and I need You, and I am so grateful for Your presence in my life. Amen.

SIN | Joni Tyner

S~ At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. Genesis 3:7 (NLT)

O~ God created Adam and Eve and they are lived perfect lives in the garden. All is well until the serpent (Satan) slithers up to Eve and tempts her with doubt and discontentment. She falls for his scheme and gives into temptation. All of a sudden she realizes she messed up BIG TIME!!   The domino effect of sin continues in chapter 3 and 4 (read it!!!) as both Adam and Eve and their offspring experience the  consequences and heartbreak of sin.

A~ Sin grows more sin.  Sin grows more pain.  It. just .does.  I have often thought about how I would do a life experience differently in hindsight. (who wouldn’t??)  I think that Eve is having that moment—her eyes were opened and she felt shame.  I have the benefit of the Bible that has a gazillion examples of people messing up and suffering the consequences of their actions.  I also have a pretty large catalog of my own life’s mess ups to remind me of this truth.

Application: I need to be on the lookout for sin in my life and fight it with God’s truth, not my own efforts.

P~ Dear Lord, please give me a hunger to read Your word so that I KNOW what is truth. Please protect my eyes and ears from the world’s pull to influence my brain.  I want to get better at avoiding sin.  I want to live a life that points others to You!!
