The Very Last | Kim Chipman

S~ Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35 (NIV)

O~ The disciples (!) were arguing about who was the greatest. This always makes me chuckle. There is truly nothing new under the sun. These me walked and talked and hung out with Jesus and still were jockeying for position. Jesus flips the position debate upside down.

A~ Anyone who wants to be first must be THE VERY LAST. Everything in our culture and in my flesh screams other things. Bigger, better, faster, more. Sometimes even church culture, because churches…well churches are full of people. We are all in process but we aren’t there yet.

The other thing is that the disciples, like us, are comparing themselves to each other. I can always find another person that I have it a little more together than in one area or another. The thing is, I can also find a gazillion people that have it way more together than me in a variety of areas…most areas quite honestly. The way I measure it in my head isn’t the same way that you even measure it, and it’s not the measuring stick You ask me to use! I’m to look more and more like YOU, not just “better” than someone else.

Humble. Servant. THE VERY LAST.

P~ Lord, help me to keep this the focus of my heart. Servant…that You would be glorified! I love You.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at

  1. I always laugh at this also Kim! Can you imagine? I think I’m the best. No, I’m the one who saw the transfiguration. But I… Jesus must have shook his head. He had just told them he was going to die and rise again! We humans are truly like sheep. You’re right. We may keep the arguments in our heads but we do the same thing.
