Mere Mortal Amidst Greatness | Kelley Deases

S~ (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Mark 9:6 (NIV)

O~ Peter, James and John had just had the privilege to witness Jesus, joined by Moses and Elijah, transfigured and glowing white before them. Peter’s reaction is to start babbling on about how good it is to be there and how they should build shelters for these prophets of old. Then Mark inserts parenthetically that Peter, in his state of fear, did not know what to say.

A~ I am always encouraged when I read, again and again, just how “human” the “heroes” of the Bible really were. Peter, who was hand-picked by Christ to be Jesus’ closest confidante, the leader of the twelve disciples and the eventual head of the Church is, in this moment, stammering and gawking, not comprehending what he is seeing or having the words to properly articulate a response. How refreshing and liberating it is to observe a guy, known on one hand to constantly say the wrong thing at the wrong time, to also be known as chosen of God and empowered to spearhead the early church.

P~ Jesus, Thank You for speaking to my heart within these parentheses today, reminding me You can use me, even in my stubborn, clumsy, misguided humanness, as You used Peter thousands of years ago. Now, as then, it is Your power and strength and not our own.

Only by Prayer | Deanna George

S~ After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” Mark 9:28-29 (NIV)

O~ Prayer is the key to faith. Prayer humbles me to depend on God. It allows me to acknowledge I need help.

A~ Prayer is required to battle situations. It is a life line that is always available. It allows me to seek help. I am not capable of solving all problems, forgetting frustrations and hurts, but through prayer ~ GOD CAN HELP. I need to pray, ask, and allow God to work in my mind and heart.

P~ Lord Jesus, thank you for the reminder of how important prayer is. You know that I can easily get in a rut and just pray the same prayer everyday. I want to get back to the meaningful prayer times where I really expose my heart and mind to your will. Please draw me into your presence. It’s a sweet, refreshing experience that does my heart and mind good.

Our team would love the privilege of praying for you! Please share how we can lift you in prayer at
