These People | Kelly Deases

S~ The Lord says, “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Isaiah 29:13 (NIV)

O~ One of my girlfriends confessed to her habit of calling her four children “these people” when she complains about them to her husband or a friend. As in, “These people are always hungry!” “These people are driving me crazy today!” Recently, her oldest caught on and said to her, “Mom, I know ‘these people’ are ‘us’ !”  Her reply was simply, “Don’t tell your brother and sisters.” (She is hilarious!)

A~ But when I read this verse, I came to the same realization. “These people” not only refers to the nation of Israel in Isaiah’s time. Jesus also used these very words towards the hypocrites of His day. See, Matthew 15:8-9 and Mark 7:6-7. My first thought was how most Americans in our generation will check the box identifying themselves as “Christian,” yet don’t go to church, read the Bible, nor raise children to know God’s truth because they don’t know it themselves. But this doesn’t help me, to sit and bemoan the pitiful plight of the nation and deceive myself that I can sit back and be fine. First, I must examine those ways in which my own lips are saying the words and my own heart is not beating with devotion. Then, that same heart should break over those I see who are far from Him and His love and I should desire to take action and reflect God’s love.

P~ “For the word is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12

Fan My Flame | Kim Chipman

S~ The Lord says:

These people come near to me with their mouth

and honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.” Isaiah 29:13 (NIV)

O~ My study Bible points out that Jesus quoted this in reference to the Pharisees’ hypocrisy. (Mark 7:6-7 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:  “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’) The root issue is performance separate from a heart of true devotion and worship.

A~ As very painful as it is to admit, I feel like I’m here right now. Just going through the motions. I don’t think my motives are super horrible…but You are pretty clear about worshiping anything but You. So convincing myself it’s not “super horrible” is justifying being lukewarm. It IS horrible. I just feel tired and I’ve lost some of my passion. My fire needs to be stoked. I want it back but I’m lacking the self discipline I need to get there. I’m not making the best choices and it’s affecting my heart for sure.

P~ Lord HELP. I don’t want to stay here. I don’t even want to BE here. Help me to rekindle the fire in my heart. Help me to choose the healthy things I need to do to guard my heart above all else. I love You!
