Grieve, mourn, wail, gloom | Nikki Metzger
S~ Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. James 4:9 (NIV)
O~ James is a practical book to live out your faith. This set of verses here are about coming near to God, verse 9 focuses on repentance.
A~ Grieving, mourning, wailing, and gloominess are not mindsets where I operate well. When I am mourning, sad, or gloomy, I try to get out of those feelings as quickly as possible. Could I be missing a piece of hearing God? Am I lacking whole-hearted repentance because my sin doesn’t cause me to mourn?
P~ Father, I think about last week, when I was so quick to care about other’s feelings over what You thought of me. Or when I got snappy with a person because of their questions towards me. I justified myself in my sin because I was starting something new. But reading this verse about changing laughter to mourning, joy into gloom…..I have so much to learn about what true repentance should look like inside of me. Oh my. Forgive me for every single time I brushed my sin off so easily! Forgive me for every time I justified my unholy response to a mean person! Lord, give me wisdom and understanding in what my sin really is in Your eyes. Let me mature, let mu faith not lack anything! I pray this in Jesus’ Name!
Don’t Justify Sin | Kim Chipman
S~ If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:17 (NIV)
O~ My study Bible says: ” We tend to think that doing wrong is sin. But James tells us that sin is also not doing right. (These 2 kinds of sin are sometimes called sins of commission and sins of omission). It is a sin to lie; it can also be a sin to know the truth and not tell it. It is a sin to speak evil of someone; it is also a sin to avoid him or her when you know he or she needs your friendship. We should be willing to help as the Holy Spirit guides us. If God has directed you to do a kind act, render a service, or to restore a relationship, do it. You will experience a renewed and refreshed vitality to your Christian faith.”
A~ I know this is absolutely true. I have experienced it! I know I don’t always do it. In fact, with regards to a couple relationships I know I’m not doing it right now…ugh. I often say I’m a master justifier – and I am – but that’s not funny or something to be proud of. When I hear YOu guide me there are times I must admit I just don’t feel like it. I don’t want to do what you are asking. I delay, procrastinate, deflect, redirect…make myself busy or distracted…This isn’t something to joke or laugh about, this is SIN. And You are holy and pretty serious about sin, especially when I know better. Ouch.
P~ Whew. Thanks for this eye opener. I know You hate sin. Disobedience is sin. Help me to remember the gravity of my choices. Help me to honor and obey You with every thought, every word, every action. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24
