Guarding Against a Callous Heart | Tara Wiley

S~ They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance. Psalm 17:10

O~ A callous is formed by repeated action – so repeated sin hardens a heart against God. The fruit of that hardening (listed in this Psalm) is a vindictive, arrogant nature focused on harming others.

What a contrast with David’s openness before God, a heart willing to let the Spirit examine him, a heart honest and pure (17:1-3). Our reading today in 2 Corinthians 7 reveals the fruit of this kind of honest, yielding, moldable heart before God – the fruit of repentance, leading to life change that brings peace and joy.

A~ Often, I must pause to ask myself: are there repeated actions of sin in my life that threaten to make my heart callous towards God?

P~ Search me, Lord, and know my heart. test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way! (Ps 139:23-24)

Reverence | Kim Chipman

S~ Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)

O~ Yesterday I journaled about the importance of obedience – of turning away from sin and toward God, pursuing peace, choosing obedience. I feel this verse is the WHY. Why go through all the effort to perfect holiness (because it’s HARD!)? Out of reverence for God.

A~ Sometimes I forget Your absolute holiness. While You are near and so intimate and compassionate You are also HOLY. You hate sin. When I fall into justifying my prideful selfishness I need to remember! Unfortunately that happens more than I’d like to admit.

P~ Lord, help me remember who I am and who You are. Help me to pursue purity in body and spirit out of reverence for You. I love You!
