The Company You Keep | Marisa Tomlinson

S~ I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. Romans 16:17 (NIV)

O~ Paul is worried about the Romans turning away from God. Paul is encouraging the early church to surround themselves with others that will help them grow in their faith, rather than detract. It’s been said that the 5 people you surround yourself with most shape the kind of person you are.  The Roman church was surrounded with people worshiping Roman gods. The Romans thought of themselves as highly religious, and attributed their success as a world power to their collective piety in maintaining good relationships with the gods. I can only imagine the opposition the early Christians must have had at first.

A~ It’s so true in my life that those I spend the most time with influence me. It’s easier for me to let my language slide when those around me have no filter; it’s easier to eat all the desserts (even when I’m trying to be healthier) when those around me are indulging; etc…

It’s ALSO easier, to spend my quiet time with God when those around me do; or stay calm and even keeled with my kids; or get in my exercise…

Paul knew what many sociologists study: surround yourself with who you want to be.

P~ Lord, thank you for the people you’ve placed in my life that lead me to be closer to You. Please let me be a light for those around me as well. Help me open my eyes to those that are negative influencers and reestablish healthy boundaries with them. Thank you for the wisdom of Your word that teaches and challenges me daily.
