Authority | Marisa Tomlinson

S~ Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1 (NIV)

O~ Does that mean that all authority figures have been established by God or that only those appointed by God have authority? Every ruler, governor, mayor, president, or leader has been established by God. The people in authority have been chosen by God for His purpose. As hard as it is for us to believe, “there is no authority except that which God has established.

A~ When I don’t agree with a leader’s politics, I find it difficult to support their authority. I follow the laws, of course, but find it very hard to support that leader personally. When I’m feeling frustrated by the seemingly foolish leaders around us, I need to remember that God has a purpose for their position. Even when people (leaders) fail, God is still sovereign. We do not know His plan and cannot see a purpose for everything. Leaning on the trust I have in Him is the best way to rid myself of the frustration. There’s a saying that was floating around Facebook during election time that seems appropriate: “no matter who is president, Jesus is still King. ” Jesus, the King of the world, directs our leaders even if we can’t imagine how.

P~ Lord, thank you for letting me rest in the knowledge that YOU have everything under your control. Thank you for putting our leaders to work for you, even if they seem to be working against what I think is right. I know that You can use everything for Your purposes. Help me to see my part in Your plan for my home, my community, my state, and my nation. Amen
