S~ He must always keep this copy of the law with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his god by obeying all the terms of this law. This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. Deuteronomy 17:19-20 (NLT)
O~ This was for the king. At the time, the Israelites did not have a king. God gave the people some guidelines for when they choose a king and also guidelines for the king himself. God wanted the chosen king to keep a copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. The reasons?
• He will learn to fear the Lord by obeying all the terms of the law.
• The regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens.
• To prevent him from turning away from the commands.
A~ This caught my attention because of the contrast of today. We have an abundance of bibles, ‘ copies of the laws’. They didn’t back then. But it also caught my attention because of the privilege I have that I have my own copy. Although I have God’s word available to me and read it daily for the most part, it didn’t prevent me from becoming proud and acting as if I was above others. ☹ Because I have free will and I sin. Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, You showed me my sin through the reading of your word and the conviction from the Holy Spirit. You brought me to a place of repentance, forgiveness, grace and mercy.
P~ Thank you dear God, for you truly are slow to anger, full of love, full of mercy and patient with me. Help me to have this heart toward others. Thank you for saving me, for the wonderful, painful, cleansing, loving, freeing process you do in me through your son, Jesus. I love you.

O~ In this part of Scripture, God is giving three rules for future kings. Don’t collect horses, don’t marry a lot of women, and keep a copy of God’s word with you and READ it daily.
A~ I have really struggled with having spiritual leaders over me who don’t dig into God’s word daily. It has caused angst in my heart and left me unsettled. In that unsettling, I’ve been less than stellar in my reaction. In fact, I handled it so poorly, I’m thinking that I need to check my heart before anything else happens.
Regular, daily time in Your word prevents me from becoming proud and acting if I’m above others. Regular time in your word will prevent me from turning away from You, even in the smallest way. You know I need this more than anyone!
P~ Lord, please always keep me close! Don’t let me stray from You or daily readings that keep me close to You! I’m so sorry about my grace less reactions to leaders who aren’t in Your word daily. Please always place me in submission to leadership that is in Your word daily. Otherwise, things just unravel. Thank You for this! I pray this in Jesus’ Name! Amen!
