First Thing’s First | Kim Chipman
S~ “And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lordsees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. So take this seriously. The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.” 1 Chronicles 28:9-10 (NLT)
O~ David is giving Solomon instructions for how to build the Temple.
A~ It’s interesting to me that David’s first instructions in Temple building have to do with his relationship with God. I’m sure the same is true for me. You want me to build a great temple with my life, but FIRST
*Learn to know You intimately
*Worship and serve You with my whole heart and a willing mind
*Seek You (I WILL find You!)
*Take this seriously
*Do the work
THEN David gave Solomon the plan for the Temple and its surroundings. I need to get my relationship with You right BEFORE I start building (DOing). Know You intimately, seek You, take it seriously and do the work You have for me to do. This is my priority.
P~ Lord, I WANT my life to be effective for You more than anything! I don’t want to waste my days. I want to allow You to do great things through me so You will be glorified. I love You!
“Don’t Believe in God?” | Kelley DeAses
S~ So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and controlled. 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NIV)
O~ A couple lessons stand out to me as I read through this chapter: (1) We are called to live sober, controlled lives, mindful of Whose we are. (2) As believers, we possess a great gift and are thus called to a higher standard than those who do not know the truth. Therefore, we should not compare our lives to those who are lost, either to judge them or to think ourselves somehow superior. (I can’t help but to think of Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady” character when I use that term….)
A~ My husband and I were in the car together the other day, after dropping a vehicle off with our mechanic. As we passed through one of the busiest intersections in the city, there was a group holding a large banner which read: “Don’t believe in God? Join the club.” They called themselves United Coalition of Reason (for those who consider themselves to be atheist, agnostic, humanist, freethinker, or do not believe in God). Seeing this display prompted my husband to begin praying for them as we drove and sparked a discussion between us not about the misguided and dangerous tactics they were using, but about how sorrowful we are for the souls of the chanting sign-carriers. Clearly they are spiritually seeking, but perhaps due to some hurt or wound or disillusionment, they have rejected God and/or His Church and now stand in staunch opposition to all things Christian. It made us truly sad to witness this display. I think that’s what it means to see others as God sees them.
P~ Father, I know You are grieved as well for the hearts of those who are far from You. I pray especially for those people holding their signs the other day. I pray You would bring people alongside and circumstances to bear which might change their hearts and minds to be open to You and Your love. What amazing testimonies in the making!
Making Pure Things Impure | Michelle Myers
S~ Those who sleep, sleep at night. Those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But we belong to the day, so we should control ourselves. 1 Thessalonians 5:7-8 (NCV)
O~ My Bible notes say, “Be pure in all that you do. We are commanded to keep ourselves busy. By doing this, we can keep ourselves from evil.”
A~ I used to stay up late. I did a lot of drinking late at night on the weekends. I now really have no desire to drink. However, I wish I could say that I still don’t struggle with staying up later than God prompts me to. The impurity doesn’t necessarily come from the activity anymore, it is the disobedience in letting the activity consume me.
I love mysteries, puzzles, etc. I like to know how things fit together. I like to know the ending. I struggle with this in my own life. It can create a lot of anxiety and wasted energy, trying to control and figure out a lot of what I have no control over. However, even small, harmless things such as a crime show, a mystery novel, or even a jig saw puzzle; can keep me up later than God is telling me to stay up.
A few nights ago, I started watching a new series on Hulu. I intended to watch one episode, maybe two, if I liked it. I finally finished the last possible episode at 1 a.m. I could feel God prompting me to go to bed, and telling me about balance, patience, and how the show will still be there when I get another free moment to sit down and relax. I can easily justify the disobedience in my head at times. “Well, I am not going to the bar, casino, or even spending any extra money.” But, I know, that is not God’s point.
The next morning came and I was TIRED. I had to get the kids to school, so I couldn’t sleep in, and I don’t like to sleep in, because I feel like I am wasting a perfectly good day. I had a hard time focusing and concentrating that day. Pretty much, God showed me that anything He has given me to enjoy, a TV show, a book, or even a jig saw puzzle; can become impure, when I don’t obey Him in how to manage, use, or enjoy it with some control.
P~ Thank you God for YOUR lessons. They keep me growing. Forgive me for my disobedience. Please help me remember, that the main way you speak to me is through experience. Since you are good, you give me boundaries to live within, so that I can have the best possible experience. This glorifies YOU. Please remind me that the small things matter to you , just as much as the big ones.
